Step into the heart of Greenland’s heritage and meet one of the world’s most unique and ancient dog breeds. Found only north of the Arctic Circle, the Greenlandic Sled Dog has shaped local culture for over 4,000 years and continues to play a vital role in everyday life.
Your guide will meet you at the pier and accompany you on a walk to the location where the dogs are kept. The experience begins with a warm welcome and an engaging indoor presentation, where knowledgeable hosts share the history of the sled dog and introduce the traditional equipment used in Arctic travel. Guests will watch a short film offering a glimpse into winter life in Greenland before heading outdoors to meet the dogs in person.
Under the guidance of experienced hosts, you will learn how to safely approach, pet, and interact with the dogs, gaining a close-up understanding of their strength, character, and importance. Demonstrations of the dogsled and traditional whip bring the musher’s craft vividly to life, and guests are invited to try handling the whip themselves. The tour concludes with time for questions, leaving you with a memorable, hands-on insight into one of Greenland’s most enduring traditions.
Please Note: This is a summer experience and does not include dog sledding. The activity level is moderate, as guests will need to walk to and from Hotel Søma (or similar), where the tour takes place. It may be possible to arrange a taxi in advance, allowing guests with limited mobility to participate.
