Set out with a small group for a more personalized experience.
Kumano Hongu Taisha, the prestigious head shrine of more than 3,000 Kumano shrines nationwide, welcomes you. Ascend the atmospheric stone stairway to admire the austere elegance of its traditional cedar-bark roof architecture. Receive a formal Shinto blessing (gokito) before you stroll over to the sacred former Oyunohara shrine grounds. On this picturesque river sandbank, stand beneath Japan's largest torii gate. It towers nearly 111 feet (34 meters) tall against the dramatic mountain backdrop.
Next, journey to the tranquil Watarase Onsen baths. Unwind in one of western Japan's most expansive open-air hot spring baths (rotenburo). Relax and let the mineral-rich, healing waters melt away your tension.
Finally, walk through Yunomine Onsen — a quaint and historic hot spring village nestled deep within a small valley. Recognized as one of Japan's oldest hot springs, it's an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. A leisurely stroll takes you along the atmospheric river, past rustic wooden inns and the steaming, bubbling waters.
Finally, enjoy a relaxing return drive to the pier.
Please note: Wear sturdy, closed-toe, non-skid walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. This is an active tour. Terrain includes uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, more than 150 steps up and down, and cobblestones that can be very slippery when wet. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Tour sequence may vary. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information. You must remove your shoes and clothing to enjoy the hot springs at Watarase Onsen (traditional Japanese baths require bathing without swimsuits). Guests with visible tattoos may be restricted from entering public hot spring baths. Bring a towel. Bathing is not included in the Yunomine Onsen area. Bring local currency, as most vendors do not accept US dollars or credit cards.
