Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine leads more than 3,000 Kumano shrines nationwide. Ascend its long, atmospheric stone stairway to admire the austere elegance of traditional cedar-bark roof architecture.
A short stroll away, discover Japan's largest torii gate, towering nearly 111 feet (34 meters) tall against a dramatic mountain backdrop. It lies within the grounds of Oyunohara, a sacred former shrine situated on a picturesque river sandbank.
Next, travel to the pristine Doro Gorge (Dorokyo) for a spectacular sightseeing boat cruise. Glide across the tranquil, emerald-green waters while admiring the towering sheer cliffs, stark rock formations, and dense forest that has inspired Japanese artists for centuries.
You'll pause at Dorokyo Meguri no Sato Kumanogawa. Stretch your legs in this serene riverside town and browse for local souvenirs or purchase refreshments (at your own expense). Reboard the coach for a comfortable journey back to the pier.
Please note: Wear sturdy, closed-toe, non-skid walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. This is an active tour. Terrain includes uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, more than 150 steps up and down, and cobblestones that can be very slippery when wet. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Tour sequence may vary. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information. You may get splashed with water during the gorge cruise. The cruise operates weather permitting; a gorgeside photo stop may be substituted. In autumn and winter, dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Bring local currency, as most vendors do not accept US dollars or credit cards.
