Uncover the history of Toba's fishing traditions and culture with a visit to the Toba Sea-Folk Museum. This is the only museum in Japan dedicated to understanding the traditions of Toba's fisherfolk, and their relationship with the sea.
For nearly half a century, the museum has been collecting the antique fishing equipment of fishing villages and researching the traditions and religion of the area's fisherfolk. The museum's seven sections include Sea Folk & Festivals, where you'll meet Ebisu — the Japanese god that brings fortune and harvest. Travel back to the past in the Wooden Boat & Navigation exhibit — a collection of traditional Japanese and Asian wooden boats. Learn the 2,000-year history of Japan's women divers at the Ama Divers in Shima exhibit.
Over a charcoal-grilled seafood lunch at the Ama Hut Hachiman Kamado, you'll hear tales of the divers' experiences. The Ama servers wear the traditional white diving suits (thought to ward off sharks) and are happy to pose for photos.
Please note:
Menu substitutions are not available; please consider this before booking. The lunch venue may change without notice; however, the lunch menu will still be seafood.
