Heungguksa Temple is a historic Buddhist temple located on the scenic slopes of Yeongchwisan Mountain in Yeosu, South Korea. Originally built during the Goryeo Dynasty, the temple is known for its peaceful atmosphere, beautiful natural surroundings, and valuable cultural heritage. Heungguksa features traditional Korean temple architecture, ancient Buddhist paintings, and historic artifacts that reflect the spiritual and artistic traditions of Korean Buddhism.
Continue on to Jinnamgwan Hall, a national treasure standing as one of the largest wood structures in the country. With its architectural elegance and significance, it will give you a glimpse into the rich history of the Joseon Dynasty. At the entrance there is a small museum and the famous Yeosu Stone Statue.
Then, stop by Yi Sun-shin Plaza, a majestic tribute to Admiral Yi Sun-shin, featuring a grand statue and surrounding historical exhibits that honor his naval legacy and contributions. Located on the Jungang-dong seaside, you can see beautiful views of the Yeosu seaside.
Continue along to the magnificent Yeosu Sky Tower, where you will go up to see breathtaking panoramic views of the glittering coastline, islands, and the azure waters of the South Sea. Following the Daejeon Expo in 1993, the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea was the nation’s second expo to be recognized by the Bureau of International Exhibitions. The expo’s seaside Yeosu City venue highlights the focus of the expo: the ocean and its value as a natural resource. The Sky Tower was the highest structure at the Expo site (73 meters high). Created from a pair of abandoned silos, it will be left permanently at the Expo site as a cultural landmark of the Yeosu Expo.
At the end, you’ll have approximately 30 minutes of free time to explore the local cafeteria and souvenir shops available on the island.
