The trulli limestone dwellings found in the southern region of Puglia are remarkable examples of drywall (mortarless) construction -- a prehistoric building technique still in use in this region. The trulli are made of roughly worked limestone boulders collected from neighboring fields and feature pyramidal, domed or conical roofs.
Your guided tour starts at Terrazzino Belvedere, situated in Aia Piccola, which boasts more than 400 trulli. Visit the Old Town (called Rione Monti), comprised of 1,030 trulli. The majority of these are still used as private houses. End your walking tour at the Church of Saint Anthony -- a trullo church with a façade of three wings adorned with a rose window and two round windows. The roof of the church is cone-shaped and measures 64 feet tall.
In the narrow streets of Alberobello, admire workshops with artisans at work. You'll have a chance to step inside a typical trullo house to see the architectural style and structure, and learn how people used to live in these unique buildings. Enjoy some free time to explore the city on your own.
Please note: Modest attire is required in churches; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered. Guides are not allowed to provide commentary inside the church at certain times; an introduction will be given outside, and you will view the inside on your own. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience.
