Leaving Taormina, you'll head deep into the Sicilian countryside for a genuine taste of the 'real Sicily'.
Barone di Villagrande Estate rests on the slopes of Mt Etna and has belonged to the Nicolosi family since ancient times. A decree issued by Emperor Charles VI, in 1727, conferred privileges and title to the Nicolosi family in recognition of their dedication to viticulture.
The farm you'll visit today is situated at 2,150 feet above sea level, in a natural, south-facing amphitheater. Fortuitously, it lies in the heart of the DOC Etna and Etna Bianco Superiore appellation zone. The volcanic soils and the typical mountain climate create a unique terroir, allowing the production of wines with moderate alcohol content, rich in fixed acidity and extracts. The red wines are stylish and firm, while the whites are long and structured, and have a delicate bouquet.
The ancient wine cellars offer their own romantic appeal and stark contrast, with modern durmast barrels set alongside old-fashioned wooden casks. The owners of Barone di Villagrande farm warmly welcome you and take great pleasure in showing you the old cellar, followed by a wonderful wine tasting session accompanied by a delicious sample of typical Sicilian products.
