Walk to the RIB base at the harbor and gear up for a fantastic RIB (rigid inflatable) boat safari. Cruising around the islands in a fast, water-level RIB is an experience you won't forget.
Heimaey's pretty harbor shelters much of the Icelandic fishing fleet. This charming landmark was almost lost in the volcanic eruption on the island in 1973. Head east from here to check out the new land that was formed by lava during the 1973 eruption.
Nearby, discover the Stakkabót bird-watching paradise. The Westman Islands have one of the largest varieties of seabird species in Iceland. These include an estimated 6 to 8 million puffins (present between May and August) in the largest puffin colony in the world close to an urban area. The islands are also home to one of the world's largest gannet and guillemot colonies. Numerous other nesting seabirds are also found here. Watch also for whales, dolphins and porpoises.
You'll venture into some of the six sea caves to see all sorts of rock formations. Kafhellir Cave is famous for the phenomenon of sunlight shining from beneath the island. Turkish pirates raided the Westman Islands in 1627 and enslaved about 380 Icelanders in North Africa; see some reminders of this strange event that remain in the caves today.
Please note: Ride will be bumpy; guests who are pregnant and those with a back or neck condition are not allowed to participate. Minimum age is 8 years. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wear closed-toe shoes with a rubber or non-skid sole. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
