Set out on the scenic drive to Dettifoss. At 147 feet tall and 328 feet wide, this waterfall offers the greatest volume of water in all of Europe with 17,657 cubic feet plunging over the edge every second. Explore the waterfall at your leisure and enjoy its cool spray.
Jökulsa Canyon National Park, on the glacial River Jökulsa, is an area positively brimming with evidence of the extraordinary forces that have sculpted this country. Marvel at the stunning Ásbyrgi Canyon with its horseshoe-shaped cliffs. Scientists say the canyon was formed by a catastrophic flood on the nearby Jökulsa River, but the locals know that it is, in fact, the hoofprint of Sleipnir -- the eight-legged horse of the Norse god Odin. Arctic and alpine vegetation surrounds a peaceful pond nestled at the base of the gigantic lava cliffs. Listen to the birdsong echoing off the cliffs -- a simple pleasure indeed.
Lunch is served at a local restaurant.
Return to Húsavik via the beautiful Tjörnes Peninsula.
Please note: Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. The terrain around the waterfall is very rugged and uneven. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
