A trip to the island of Himmafushi offers you a glimpse of local life. Himmafushi Island is a fishing village and, like most Maldivian villages, it boasts a very simple lifestyle that is quite different from that in the capital of Male. You’ll gain a terrific insight into the simple life led by the villagers—you’ll see how they dry fish and interact with the island dwellers to find out about their values, beliefs and traditions. You may even be invited by the hospitable villagers to sample home-cooked local fare. Stop at the boutiques or stalls to shop for local handicrafts, knickknacks and souvenirs. The population of the village is seasonally as high as 900 people, with 500 people living here all year round.
