The Taj Mahal, inscribed in 1983, stands as an immense mausoleum crafted from white marble. It was built in Agra between 1631 and 1648 by order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife. This architectural marvel represents the pinnacle of Indo-Islamic design and is celebrated as one of India’s most treasured cultural gems—a universally admired masterpiece.
Day 1 (L, D)
Upon disembarking the ship, you’ll transfer to the airport for your flight to Delhi. Enjoy lunch on-board during the journey. Upon arrival in Delhi, you’ll be transferred to The Oberoi New Delhi Hotel (or a similar accommodation) for dinner and an overnight stay
Day 2 (B, L, D)
Begin your day with a visit to Old Delhi. For this adventure, we’ve arranged special transportation—brightly colored bicycle rickshaws, the perfect way to navigate the bustling alleyways. As you enter Chandni Chowk, India’s largest mosque, built in 1658 by Shah Jehan, comes into view. Its traditional style is enhanced by innovative red and black stripes on the white marble domes. Chandni Chowk, once the heart of Mughal-era commerce, remains a vibrant wholesale market for textiles, electronics, and watches. Designed by Jahanara Begum (Shah Jahan’s favorite daughter), this area was once home to affluent families. The historic buildings still stand, leaning curiously over the narrow streets. Explore the charming little shops, each specializing in different goods—colorful bangles, gleaming silverware, brass artifacts, gold jewelry, vivid fabrics, hardware, and tantalizing street food that fills the air with aromatic spices. An unforgettable experience awaits!
After returning to the hotel for lunch, embark on a tour of New Delhi. Drive through “Lutyens’ Delhi,” commissioned in 1911 and inaugurated in 1931. This meticulously planned area blends British and Indian architectural styles. Pass by the War Memorial Arch, famously known as India Gate, and continue down Rajpath, flanked by impressive government buildings. Your next stop is Humayun’s Tomb—a magnificent red sandstone monument built by Haji Begum, Humayun’s first wife and Emperor Akbar’s mother. Her forward-thinking design influenced the iconic Taj Mahal, constructed nearly a century later. Conclude the day with dinner and an overnight stay at The Oberoi New Delhi (or a similar accommodation).
Day 3 (B, L, D)
Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel. Then, hop aboard a motor coach for Agra—the second capital of the Mughal Empire during the 16th and 17th centuries. The ride itself is an unforgettable experience. Agra today is a captivating blend of red sandstone and white marble structures, narrow alleys, quaint buggies, and an enduring charm that harks back to its Mughal legacy.
Upon arriving in Agra, visit the magnificent Agra Fort, constructed by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565. This sprawling fort, predominantly built from red sandstone, echoes the grandeur of a bygone era. Its vast halls transport you through time, revealing the rich history of the Mughal dynasty.
Later in the evening, witness the iconic Taj Mahal. This architectural marvel needs no introduction—it lies at the heart and soul of every visitor’s pilgrimage to Agra. Commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan, the Taj Mahal stands as a white marble memorial to his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Designed by Persian architect Ustad Isa, this masterpiece took 22 years to complete. Its elegant domes, intricately carved screens, and exquisite inlay work continue to captivate admirers worldwide.
Dinner and Overnight Stay: The Oberoi Amarvilas Hotel (or similar)
Day 4 (B, L, D)
This morning, we arrange another visit to the Taj Mahal, this time to capture the magical play of light during sunrise. It’s a brief yet unforgettable opportunity for photography. After breakfast, we’ll set off for Jaipur—the Pink City. Jaipur’s unique beauty emanates from the pervasive pink hue that adorns its buildings. The effect, especially at sunset, has enchanted visitors for centuries
Following lunch and some leisure time, we invite you to take an optional walk through the local bazaar. The bustling alleyways of the old-world markets offer an unforgettable experience. Against the desert backdrop, Rajasthan’s inhabitants don flamboyant attire: men in bright turbans and extravagant mustaches, and women in day-glow-colored saris. As you stroll, the streets come alive with pedestrians, vehicles, bullock carts, camel caravans, meandering cows, and even the occasional elephant! Jaipur is a shopper’s paradise, renowned for its gemstones and jewelry—precious and semi-precious stones set in gold, exquisite meenakari (enamel work), and chunky silver pieces. Explore antiques, artifacts, carpets, Pichwai paintings, and miniature silk and paper artworks. Don’t miss the unique blue pottery and glass bangles! Fabrics abound, from brocades to tie-and-dye, block prints, and the famous ‘mirror work’ embroidery used in table linens, cushion covers, and ready-made garments. Your evening awaits at Rambagh Palace (or a similar accommodation).
Day 5 (B, L, D)
Start your day with breakfast at the hotel. Then, immerse yourself in the grandeur of the City Palace complex—a captivating blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture. The museum within the palace showcases opulence and historical treasures.
Adjacent to the City Palace stands the Jantar Mantar Observatory. Its name translates to “Calculation Instrument.” Built between 1728 and 1734 by Maharaja Jai Singh, this observatory is one of five constructed across different cities. Modeled after the Jantar Mantar in Delhi, Jaipur’s version is the largest and was ahead of its time. Explore its fascinating and fun astronomical instruments!
After lunch, hop back on the motor coach for the journey back to Delhi. Dinner and an overnight stay await at The Oberoi New Delhi (or a similar accommodation).
