Drive from Takoradi to a typical fishing village to meet the chief and the elders. You will have an opportunity to interact with the community and see villagers undertaking their daily trades. One such trade is the processing of gari -- a West African staple food made from cassava. Also of interest is the use of a century-old method of smoking fish using a traditional Chorkor smoker.
Step inside the community school, where some students will greet and briefly entertain you.
At the Cape Coast Castle, your guide will show you around the castle, which also houses the West African Historical Museum. This castle was built by the Swedes in 1652 and later taken over by the British. See the slave quarters and Palaver Hall, where human lives were bought and sold.
Lunch is served at Coconut Grove Beach Resort.
Visit Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese and later used for slave auctions. A brief tour reveals dungeons and cells where slaves who attempted to escape were incarcerated. Take some photos of the distinctive architecture and take in the panoramic views of the fishing harbor and old township from the castle.
Finally, settle in for the 90-minute drive back to port.
Note:
Transfer from the port to the village is 90 minutes each way. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring a hat and wear biodegradable sunscreen. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up.
