Ammassalik Museum & Culture
Tasiilaq is a special area to visit in many ways. But cultural it is very interesting. The locals are close related to the culture, because it is only 135 year since the area was completely isolated with absolutely no contact to the rest of the world. Here the Inuit’s lived in peat houses or tents, and only had what they could find in the nature. Tasiilaq was first founded in 1894 (129 years ago) and since then, evolution in the area has been going fast, and today we have a modern society with modern houses, internet, supermarket, Christianity etc. In the museum you also find a small bookshop and souvenirs such as posters, postcards, tupilaks etc. We make sure your guest have free entrance at the museum, where your guest can become more knowledge on the East Greenlandic history. The museum is located in the first church of Tasiilaq it also includes a peat house exhibition and a photo exhibition. In front of the museum, with a nice view to the harbor, there will be hold a choir singing or drum dance performance. The performance last for approximately 1/2 hour.
Stunk
Tupilaks is one of Greenland biggest souvenir brands. It is handmade figures made by local artist. In Tasiilaq their workshop is called Stunk and it is placed right in the center of the town. A Tupilak was original and hybrid-figure made by bones, skin, feathers, wood etc. after it was done, it was cursed and send out in the spiritual world to harm somebody else. We will make sure the local artist knows you’re coming so they will be ready to show your guest their work.
Dogfeeding
There is around 500 dogs in Tasiilaq. The dogs are living in packs. And during winter they are used for dogsledding. They live outside all year around and are not domesticated as pets, but as working dogs.
During a half hour event we give your guest the opportunity to learn more about the dogs and the dogsled traditions in East Greenland. We do that during a dog feeding presentation, where a local dog owner will feed his dogs usually with a seal. After the feeding a guide will tell about dog sled culture and answer questions.
The Church
The church of Tasiilaq was opened 1986. It has a special shape as a pentagon, and inside is beautiful decorated by the Greenlandic artist Aka Høgh. Here you will find kneelers made by sealskin, sealing painting showing the sky, a baptistery and alter decorations made by driftwood.
