Take a Zodiac cruise around the edge of tiny Flatey Island in Breidafjörður Bay to observe the multitude of seabirds that make it their summer home. Watch for Atlantic puffins, common eiders, guillemots, and Arctic terns. Seals are also occasionally spotted. Step ashore to walk through the charming settlement, with the Expedition team on hand to explain the intricacies of life here. Visit the diminutive church whose frescoes feature the island's residents and photograph the colorful buildings surrounding the old harbor.
As Flatey's name implies, the island is completely flat, inviting you to follow pathways to and through seldom-explored areas. More than thirty secretive seabird species vie for real estate in the spindly grasses just off the trails, hoping to nest and raise their chicks in camouflage, only to discover that thousands of others have had the exact same idea.
Please note: Included Expeditions cannot be booked in advance. The ship's Expeditions team will communicate finalized content and departure information. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
