Explore the living heritage of the Alutiiq people on this enriching cultural experience. Centered on a guided visit to the Alutiiq Museum, this tour traces thousands of years of Alutiiq history, from ancient village life and subsistence traditions to cultural resilience and revitalization today.
During an interactive workshop, you'll experience a curated journey through various activities that may include art, dance or cooking demonstrations. Gain a deeper understanding of how Alutiiq people have lived in balance with the land and sea across generations, and how their culture continues to thrive in modern Alaska.
You'll hear directly from the artists as they discuss their craft; then, walk through key museum galleries that highlight ancient village life, subsistence practices, tools, clothing, ceremonial art, Russian contact, and cultural continuity. Interpretative materials and expert commentary emphasize how traditional knowledge continues to inform Alutiiq life today.
You'll also enjoy a brief panoramic city drive past the Russian Orthodox Church and other highlights of this small town.
The local marketplace features Kodiak art, a bookstore, a bakery and various shops. Time permitting, guests wishing to stay at the marketplace to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must make their own way back to the ship.
