A short van drive from Kodiak town delivers you to one of Alaska's most enchanting rainforests.
Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park, is a magical, velvety green landscape waiting to be explored. Breathe in the temperate rainforest atmosphere, where moss-laden Sitka spruce — the only endemic conifer on the island — tower above you in silent majesty.
Follow your knowledgeable guide on a hike through emerald forests and open flower-filled meadows, past lily-pad choked lakes and scenic rugged beaches, and atop the sea cliffs bedecked in delicate flora. Keep an eye out, too, for Kodiak's native and endemic wildlife. You may spot puffins nesting in the cliffs, sea otters tethering their pups in the kelp forests, whales feeding in the nutrient-rich waters just offshore, or eagles circling above and searching for their next meal.
Explore tide pools to find sea anemones, photograph a chocolate lily or wild rose, or perhaps pick salmonberries while learning about the enormous Kodiak bears that share these trails.
Hear fascinating stories of revered and mysterious Alutiiq whalers, a cataclysmic volcanic eruption that buried the island, and the great earthquake of 1964.
Your hike concludes with a glimpse into World War II history, visiting bunkers, gun mounts, and magazines perched dramatically on the cliffsides. This era changed Kodiak forever making for a memorable combination of nature and history.
