Founded circa 1350, Ayutthaya became the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai. It was destroyed by the Burmese in the 18th century. Today, its remains, characterized by prang (reliquary towers) and gigantic monasteries, eloquently evoke its former splendor.
Day 1 (L/D) Laem Chabang - Ayutthaya - Bangkok
From Laem Chabang, enjoy a three-hour drive to the historical city of Ayutthaya. You'll stop en route to visit the beautiful Bang Pa-In Summer Palace -- a popular summer retreat for Thai kings. Bang Pa-In has a captivating collection of marvelous pavilions in a variety of Thai, Chinese, Italian and Victorian architectural styles encircled by a lovely garden and lake.
Following lunch, continue to Ayutthaya Historical Park. Visit Wat Mahathat Temple, once the center of Buddhism in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Then, visit Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the most important temple within the Royal Palace compound.
And finally, step inside the complex at Wat Chaiwattanaram with its large prang and pagodas, most of which are in excellent condition.
It's a 90-minute drive to the hotel in Bangkok, where you will check in and freshen up before this evening's activity. Enjoy a traditional Thai dinner at the hotel, accompanied by a classical Thai dance performance.
Hotel: Shangri-La Bangkok (or similar)
Day 2 (B/L) Bangkok - Laem Chabang
After breakfast at the hotel, board a tuk-tuk -- an open local motor tricycle -- for a transfer to the Grand Palace. Take a 90-minute guided tour through the Royal Palace Grounds and Grand Palace.
The sacred image of the Buddha sits high atop a golden throne in the Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). Carved in the 15th century from a single piece of jade, the Buddha guards the sovereignty of the Kingdom and the religious beliefs of the people.
Afterward, walk to a nearby pier and embark on a private boat for a cruise on the Chao Phraya River. Along the way, observe local residents living and working along the water and view the spectacular Wat Arun, or Temple of Dawn -- one of Bangkok's most recognizable landmarks.
Enjoy lunch at the hotel before the 2.5-hour return journey to Laem Chabang, where you will reboard the ship.
