This exclusive combination tour layers mini aspects of Hiroshima's exciting culture and history.
Visit Hiroshima Lacquer Art Workshop, founded in 1913. This workshop preserves the 400-year-old tradition of Hiroshima Buddhist altars. Japan's renowned lacquer artist, Mr Takayama Naoya, a 4th-generation artisan, leads a hands-on activity to create a gold-leaf coaster using traditional techniques. You will learn about the history of Hiroshima Buddhist altars and the story of lacquer craftsmanship. Discover the unique techniques passed down through generations as Mr Takayama explains his inspiration and meticulous process. His works were selected as gifts for the G7 Summit, and this exceptional gentleman personally guides your tour and introduces his award-winning pieces. Take home your own gold-leaf coaster as a special memento.
Next, board a private boat to explore the offshore oyster-farming rafts. Hiroshima is the top producer of oysters in Japan, and the waters off Miyajima offer perfect conditions for their growth. Take an up-close look at these massive rafts and learn how fishermen have cultivated world-class oysters here for centuries.
The journey culminates in a maritime pilgrimage to the Itsukushima Shrine. Seeing the Great Torii gate and the shrine from the silence and solitude of the water is a luxury, private experience that allows you to savor this UNESCO World Heritage Site in serenity.
Please note: The boat's approach to the Great Torii gate depends on the tide levels. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour sequence may vary. Scooters cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. The Hiroshima Lacquer Art Workshop and the oyster farming rafts are active workplaces, not leisure facilities; participants may be asked to take turns to observe the work up close. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
