Kuji is a city renowned for its deep-rooted Japanese tradition and its Amber Museum — the only facility in Japan dedicated entirely to amber.
Kuji's amber dates back approximately 90 million years to the late Cretaceous period — the age of dinosaurs. At the museum, you will see how this transparent, golden gemstone was formed. You'll have the opportunity to marvel at exquisite amber crafts and even discover ancient insect fossils trapped within, much like the scenes from Jurassic Park.
Enjoy a local lunch; then, head to the Moguranpia Aquarium, built into the tunnels of an underground oil storage base, creating an atmosphere unlike any other aquarium.
The highlight of your visit is a spectacular performance by Ama — traditional female divers. Dressed in traditional clothing, skilled divers plunge into the water without modern equipment to demonstrate techniques passed down for generations. You will be amazed by their breath control and agility as they interact with marine life in a tank that perfectly replicates the local Sanriku coastal environment.
Please note: Underground tunnel temperatures may be lower than outdoors. Bring a light jacket. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. Tour sequence may vary. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
