Mount Bromo is an active volcano and part of the Tengger Massif, in East Java, Indonesia. At 7,641 feet, Bromo is not the highest peak in the range, but it is the best known of them all. The massif area is one of the most-visited attractions in East Java. The volcano belongs to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The name derives from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god. Once a year the local people climb Mount Bromo for the Kasada ritual -- a celebration of ancestor worship. Mount Bromo sits in the middle of a vast plain called the Sea of Sand -- a protected nature reserve since 1919.
You will visit Mount Bromo the way the locals do, accessing the nearby mountain village of Cemoro Lawang by coach; then continue to Mount Bromo by four-wheel-drive vehicle. Enjoy the amazing and famous landscape of Mount Bromo at your first view point at Puncak Seruni. Continue down across Sea Sand to the meeting point at Mt.Bromo Temple. Here, you'll throw in a dash of adventure with a pony ride (or walk if you prefer) to the rim of the crater; then it's truly back-to-basics as you proceed on foot to climb the last 100 steps to the lip of the Mount Bromo crater. Was it all worth it? Oh yes! Mount Bromo stands in a sea of ashen, volcanic sand, surrounded by the towering cliff of the crater's edge. The immense size of the crater and the supernatural beauty of the surrounding scenery are really very special indeed.
Re-board your 4x4 vehicle for the drive back to Cemoro Lawang village. An Indonesian buffet lunch is served here at a local restaurant. After lunch, you will drive back to Probolinggo port and to the ship.
Please note:
The ponies are used as transportation and thus are led by their owners -- this is not a horseback-riding excursion. Minimum height is 4'10". Minimum age is 7 years. Not advisable for guests with neck, back or mobility issues. Traffic may cause some delays.
