A scenic drive from the port brings you to the iconic Arashiyama District, known for its tranquil beauty and cultural heritage.
Step into the serene Arashiyama Bamboo Grove — one of Kyoto's most famous sights. Walk along the winding paths surrounded by towering bamboo stalks, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere.
Head to the local restaurant to experience the riverside dining style called Kawadoko. This is a hallmark of Kyoto's summer culture, where tables are set up on platforms suspended above a flowing river or stream. The cool breeze from the water creates a refreshing atmosphere, making it an ideal way to escape the summer heat. Overlooking a gentle stream surrounded by lush greenery, you'll enjoy a seasonal Japanese lunch. The serene sound of the river complements the natural beauty of the setting, enhancing the experience and allowing you to fully relax.
Next, visit Katsuoji Temple, nestled in the serene mountains of Osaka Prefecture. This historic temple, with origins dating back over 1,300 years, is renowned for its connection to good fortune and victory. Known as the Temple of Winning, Katsuoji has long been a place where warriors, athletes, and students come to pray for success in their endeavors.
Conclude your journey with a comfortable drive back to the ship.
Please note:
Tour requires walking approximately 0.6 mile each way from the coach parking to the Bamboo Forest. Expect crowding as this is a popular attraction. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and approximately 200 steps at Katsuoji Temple, with a walk of about 800 yards within the temple grounds. The transfer to Kawadoko (restaurant) is by microbus. The group may be split, and some wait time may be required. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse. Tour sequence may vary.
The area where the riverside dining (Kawadoko) is located is approximately 3 degrees cooler than central Kyoto. It can feel chilly in March and November depending on the weather, so we recommend bringing a coat or jumper. In April and October, it is a good idea to bring an additional layer just in case. Please note that it can still be quite hot in August and September. The Kawadoko dining area is located outdoors, so in case of sudden rain or if it rains the day before the call day, lunch may be moved indoors.
