Have a devouring passion for chocolate? How about old-fashioned nougat, lollipops, and honeycomb? If the answer is yes then this four-hour excursion is a yummy adventure you can really sink your teeth into.
Board your coach and be whisked away to the Margaret River Wine Region, which not only boasts some of the country’s most significant wines, but artisan cheeses, gourmet foods and unique sweets, as well.
Sit back and relax as the miles fly by your window while you anticipate the sweet treats in store at your first location. Tucked between the vineyards is the town of Yallingup, home of Gabriel Chocolate, Western Australia's first bean-to-bar chocolate maker.
After you arrive, you’ll have time to shop and sample a number of their delicious delights. Unlike other chocolatiers who buy their chocolate pre-mixed and pre-melted, Gabriel Chocolate purchases raw beans from places as far away as Sambirano, Ghana and Rio Caribe. The entire process takes place in-house and you can see the large burlap sacks of beans stacked in both the showroom and small storeroom just off the main entrance. The chocolate is then made from scratch on the premises, where the cocoa beans are sorted by hand, roasted, and tempered.
After you’ve had a sampling, you may wish to purchase one of their decadent hot chocolates, salted chocolate chip cookies or hand-made, chocolate-dipped ice creams. In the mood for a cup of hot chocolate and a muffin? Then be sure to stroll over to Gabriel Café where you can buy baked goods, chocolate drinks, and coffee.
Back on the coach, you’ll travel inland to the quaint town of Cowaramup, named by the Aborigines after the purple crowned lorikeet, Cowara, that once inhabited the area. Originally a timber town in the 1930’s, today it’s known for its local wines, cheeses and toothsome confectionaries like the Margaret River Nougat Co.
Once inside, you may desire to head straight for the candy. The store features 22 nougat flavor combinations including their famous Nougaretto Liqueur, which comes in two flavors: honey and almond, and coffee and almond. Whether you prefer your nougat soft and chewy or hard and crunchy, you can watch how it’s made through the nougat viewing window in the Sample Room.
For delicious fudge, creamy chocolates and honeycomb you’ll head to your final stop, the Candy Cow. An Australian favorite that you may like to sample is honey crunch, which consists of sugar, honey and syrup. You’ll also find fine tea and coffee, as well as a diverse variety of Australian and international candies and chocolates here, too.
Now at the end of the Sweet Tooth Trail, you’ll rejoin your coach, perhaps laden with delicious gifts, for the relaxing ride back to your ship.
