From Tórshavn, a 50-minute panoramic drive north takes you past idyllic villages and the old whaling station at Áir. The Bridge Over the Atlantic spans the narrow Sundini Channel to connect Eysturoy with the larger island of Streymoy. Because the channel is so narrow, spectacular eddies form at the base of the bridge when the current is running strong.
Pass Eiði and cross the mountains to Gjógv. On the way, you are treated to a view of the Giant and the Hag — two very distinctive sea stacks that fire the imagination. You'll also pass the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands — Slættaratindur (2,983 feet) — and see Gjógv Gorge, which provides a marvelously convenient natural harbor for the local fishing fleet to shelter in.
Stop in the village of Gjógv for coffee or tea with cake.
The panoramic drive back to Tórshavn is via the mountain road, and you will stop at the viewpoint overlooking the capital.
Please note: Wear comfortable, non-skid walking shoes. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf.
