Your tour will start in the port town of Alghero, where you'll board an air-conditioned motorcoach and travel for 75 minutes across the northwestern tip of the island, passing through Porto Torres. Enjoy views of wild rock formations and the island's dense chaparral along the way.
En route to Castelsardo, we'll stop at Elephant Rock for a photo opportunity. The wind and elements have sculpted this large rock formation into the shape of an elephant's head. It is also believed to have once been a prehistoric burial ground.
Upon arrival in Castelsardo, you'll discover a charming village steeped in history. The Doria clan of Genoa founded this fortified town in the 12th century. Today, Castelsardo is a prime tourist destination and center for Sardinian crafts.
Explore the town on a guided walking tour that travels from the castle to the cathedral. The castle, Castello, was built in the 12th century by Genoa's powerful Doria clan, which ruled Sardinia for nearly two centuries. The restored castle is now home to a museum showcasing traditional Sardinian weaving-from baskets and other everyday implements to the elaborately woven lobster traps used by local fishermen.
Be sure to snap a shot of the Chiesa di Santa Maria, a narrow church that occupies a dramatic site below the castle. It is home to the 14th-century crucifix known as the Black Christ of Castelsardo. The cathedral is a fine example of Baroque design and home to a 15th-century masterpiece, Madonna with Angels, by the artist known only as the "Master of Castelsardo."
Castelsardo is known throughout Sardinia for its craftsmanship in weaving and basketry, which make fine gifts or souvenir keepsakes. You'll have approximately 2 hours total in town, including free time following the tour to shop for souvenirs before re-boarding the motorcoach and returning to the pier in Alghero.
