Situated in the countryside just outside Cellino San Marco, between Brindisi and Lecce, Masseria Li Veli was built in the second half of the 19th century by Marchese Antonio de Viti de Marco, an aristocrat and highly educated economist and politician, but also an enlightened farmer and landowner. He spent time in the United States to learn new ideas and methods that he brought back to Italy: his ideas and estate became a model for the South.
The activity stopped during World War II and, with the death of the Marchese in 1943. In the late ’90 the Falvo family brought it back to life, with the objective to rediscover some of Puglia’s ancient grape varieties, some of which had almost disappeared less than 40 years ago, to honor the Marchese Viti de Marco’s legacy and to carry on his work and memory.
Upon arrival, we will see the vineyard, to better understand the origin and the culture of the different grape varieties, Negroamaro, Primitivo, Susumaniello, and Aleatico. We will then move to the cellar and the production area, rows and rows of stainless steel and new French oak barriques, and the most modern and innovative vinification techniques to ensure the highest quality wines.
At the end of the tour, we can either enjoy a simple wine tasting or a delicious, local “Pugliese” cuisine lunch, prepared with seasonal ingredients, accompanied by different wines of the highest quality: an experience that will be enriched by our host telling us about the history and tradition of Li Veli.
