Journey back in time with a scenic one-hour drive through the lush countryside to the Jelling Monuments and Experience Center.
At the Jelling Experience Center, a state-of-the-art museum offers a sensory glimpse into the life and legacy of the Vikings. The museum recalls stories told around the campfire, insights into daily life as a Viking and a warrior, the path to Valhalla, and the region's eventual transition to Christianity.
Visit the great Jelling Monuments — the earliest fortification of any Danish town. Traces of the fortifications are today marked by concrete pillars. The extensive palisades met travelers with 10-foot-tall oak posts, depicting a longship that would transport Vikings beyond the borders of this world and into the afterlife's Hall of the Gods — Valhalla.
Next to the burial mounds, the two famous Jelling Stones, with their authentic runic inscriptions, recount the victory of Christianity over the Nordic gods. Perhaps not surprisingly, these inscriptions are known as "the baptism certificate of Denmark." The newest of the stones dates back to AD 965.
