Depart Douglas and enjoy a scenic drive through the southeast of the island. Cross the famous Fairy Bridge, where local tradition says it’s unlucky not to greet the fairies said to live beneath it. Many stories tell of misfortune for those who forget to say “Laa Mie” (good day).
Continue to Castletown, the island’s former capital until 1869. Here you’ll see the impressive Castle Rushen (viewed from outside), one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the British Isles, and take a short stroll along its charming harbour.
Next, head to the southern tip and the beautiful bay at Port Erin, then follow the western coastline to Peel, fondly called “Sunset City.” Its striking castle ruins overlook a quaint fishing port with narrow streets and a lovely harbour.
After a brief stop in Peel, travel inland to Tynwald Hill in St John’s. This tiered, grass-covered mound is home to the world’s oldest continuous parliament, dating back to 979. Each July 5th, laws passed during the previous year are proclaimed here in both Manx and English.
Pause for photos at Tynwald Hill before passing through the scenic central valley known as the Plains of Heaven, returning to Douglas.
