Explore Portsmouth to get acquainted with its marine history and significance.
On your travels, you will pass the birthplace of Charles Dickens — the English writer who created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works included Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol.
Continue through the city center full of vibrant shops and cafés. Watch for HMS Nelson and the Historic Dockyard, whose royal barracks date back to 1194. Much of its history is synonymous with that of the vessels it harbors — HMS Warrior (1860), HMS M.33, and HMS Victory. The latter is the Royal Navy's most famous warship, best known for her role in the Battle of Trafalgar.
Leave the transportation outside the historic dockyard and trade dry land for the sea as you set off on a cruise around Portsmouth's historic harbor, snapping photos of some of the world's most famous naval ships.
Afterward, climb the Spinnaker Tower, a 229-foot-tall (70 m) observation tower that is the centerpiece of Portsmouth Harbour's redevelopment. It offers a bird's-eye perspective of the harbor.
Return to the ship, retracing your outbound route. Time permitting, guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must make their own way back to the ship.
Please note: Tour requires approximately 30 minutes of walking. Participants must be able to keep up with the group. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and steps. Access to the highest floor of Spinnaker tower requires climbing approximately 50 steps; an elevator takes you to the main viewing platform.
