The island of Portland lies on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset in England. It is known primarily for its huge (and still functioning) quarry. The stone from this quarry has been used in a multitude of famous buildings, including Buckingham Palace and St Paul's Cathedral.
Pause at the Olympic Rings Sculpture, established to commemorate the London 2012 Olympic Games sailing venue in nearby Weymouth.
Meet Portland Bill — not a person but a very striking lighthouse at the southern tip of the island. Here, your guide will encourage you to explore outside, around the base, providing a brief history of and orientation to the structure and its long history. Step inside the Portland Bill Visitor Center, housed in the former lighthouse keepers' dwelling.
On the return journey, you’ll drive past St George's Church, once derelict and deserted, but now being lovingly restored by volunteers.
Please note: Entrance to the lighthouse is not included; you are welcome to enter (at your own expense) during your free time. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, grass, and steps. The lighthouse may be closed in extreme weather.
