Rotterdam's post-war architectural boom has led to an eclectic landscape in a city that orients, in every direction, to the water.
A water taxi will bring you from the pier to the city center, where your tour will begin.
A stroll through a mixed residential and commercial neighborhood leads to the iconic cube houses -- a curiosity to visitors since they were built in the late 1970s. These striking homes are cubes tilted 45 degrees on their side, optimized to make the most of the available interior space. The result is a building that looks and feels unlike any other.
Across the street, the famous upside-down U-shaped Markthal (Market Hall) is a delight for all the senses. Wander through its cavernous proportions and sample some local produce as you explore among rows of vendors selling fresh food and produce.
At Het Witte Huis, climb Europe's first skyscraper. This plucky, pretty little building survived the German bombardments of 1940. Today, it offers a sweeping view of Rotterdam's picturesque Oude Haven (Old Port). With its beautiful façade of white glazed brick adorned with Art Nouveau mosaics and statues, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
The water taxi returns you to the ship.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Het Witte Huis is only open during the weekends; a rooftop view from elsewhere is substituted. Tour is non-refundable 7 days prior to departure.
