Discover the unique ambiance of German heritage and culture that prevails in some parts of southern Brazil and is most evident in Blumenau. You’ll also witness the fertile, lush farm country along the 1 ½ drive between Portobelo and Blumenau.
Once you arrive on the outskirts of Blumenau, visit the Colonial Family Museum for insight of the city's first early settlers. Pay tribute to Blumenau's founder, Dr. Otto Blumenau, whose task it was to prepare the settling of the German immigrants along the banks of the Itajaí-Açu River, and admire the museums traditional alpine design. Although early Blumenau was initially intended to develop as a farming community, the arrival of craftsmen introduced textiles, metallurgy and crystal manufacturing into the economy. Today, Brazil is known for its quartz-rich crystal, that is produced from the sand of Minas Gerais State, that become works of art at the crystal factory of Blumenau. Next, your drive will proceed to the German Village, site of Blumenau's annual Oktoberfest. There will be no festivity going on once it happens in October, but it is a must see as this Oktoberfest is the second largest outside of Germany. Following the free time, you make your return drive to the pier in Portobelo and to the ship.
Please note: The drive to Blumenau is approximately 90-minutes and while the tour includes some moderate walking at the stops, it is mainly a panoramic coach tour of the city's main points of interest. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Lightweight clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. It is further advised that the quality of the guides and transportation in this destination may not be of the same quality that is found in other more progressive areas. While the city of Blumenau with its German heritage has some interesting features that world-travelers will find of interest, the tourist infrastructure is limited and may not appeal to all of our guests.
