Step aboard a comfortable catamaran at Ushuaia’s pier and set out on a scenic journey along the Beagle Channel. As you cruise past Lapataia Bay toward the southeast, enjoy sweeping views of snow-capped mountains, pristine landscapes, and the diverse bird and marine life that call this region home. On clear days, you’ll spot Albert Agostini National Park to the southwest and even glimpse Puerto Williams across the channel to the south.
Along the way, you’ll see Isla de los Pajaros, home to a lively colony of Imperial cormorants, and Isla de los Lobos, where two species of sea lions bask and play on the rugged shoreline. You’ll continue through the Les Eclaireurs Archipelago to view the iconic lighthouse that guides ships through these waters.
Further east, at Hammer Island, you’ll spend about 30 minutes observing from the boat a thriving colony of Magellanic penguins waddling about in their distinctive gray-and-white plumage.
Throughout the cruise, you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife. A light snack will be served onboard to make your experience even more enjoyable.
Important Notes:
Please be aware that the amount of walking required may vary depending on where the catamaran is docked; in some cases, it can be up to half a mile each way. Access to the boat is via a marine ramp from the pier, which may be quite steep at low tide. For your comfort and safety, wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes and dress warmly in layers, including a windproof and waterproof outer layer. A warm hat, gloves, and a scarf are also recommended. The tour operates rain or shine but may be canceled by the operator in the event of severe weather or unsuitable conditions. You will not go ashore at the penguin colony; instead, the skipper will maneuver the boat close to the shoreline so you can view the penguins from onboard. Shade is limited, so bring a hat and sunglasses, and use biodegradable sunscreen to avoid sunburn. It is also advisable to carry bottled water. The boat trip lasts approximately 2.5 hours each way, with about 30 minutes dedicated to penguin viewing.
