Kupang is Timor's largest city and had an important role in the Dutch-Portuguese fight for hegemony over Indonesia and the lucrative spice trade. Kupang's fame goes back to the aftermath of the mutiny on the Bounty. The city is known as Lt. William Bligh's final destination after traveling more than 3,600 nautical miles having been sent adrift near Tofua (Tonga). Traditional lifestyles and ikat weaving still play an important role in the local inland communities.
Board a small minibus for the best way to experience everything this destination has to offer. Set off on a 90-minute drive to the highland village of Baun, once the center of the Amarasi Kingdom. At the village gate, you will be welcomed by a traditional procession of "Natoni" followed by a Timorese traditional dance.
During your visit, see the king’s place of ‘Koro’ and discover cultural traditions of Timorese dance, betel nut chewing and a demonstration of ikat weaving. There will be an opportunity to purchase some of the weavings if you like. Fresh young coconuts, traditional coffee and local food will be on display and available to taste while Sasando music is performed.
Leaving Baun village, continue our drive to visit a local elementary or junior high school and meet the students.
Please note:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. On school holidays, it will not be possible to meet the students. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen. Bring a hat. Restroom facilities are limited and may be somewhat basic. Transportation will likely not be air conditioned.
