Your journey begins at pier with a scenic drive to Nanliao , a small community located in Penghu’s Huxi Township. What makes this community so fascinating is that many community members still use traditional farming practices and maintain many of the customs of generations past. Most of the architecture you see also remains untouched, allowing you to feel transported back to a bygone time. Nanliao Village is one of the oldest villages in Penghu county. Home to less than 500 people, its coral wall architecture perfectly preserves Taiwan’s rural life and best illustrates how closely Penghu’s villages are tied to the ocean.
Green Destinations described Nanliao as a rural landscape whose locals are committed to promoting low-carbon tourism. Nanliao village was also highlighted as the Top 100 Green Destinations in year 2017 and 2018.
As young people here moved away from rural areas to cities, leaving only the elderly behind, government have launched rural regeneration programs to help stop decline. NanLiao is one of the most seriously affected by population aging. What most eye-catching is large number of traditional old houses still survive here. First thing to experience when you enter the village is the practice of wearing masks how to make the mask by towel as this is a traditional method used mainly by women of the community to combat the piercing heat and other harsh weather conditions while working outdoors. Next, you’ll be taken to a traditional fish stove, the Fu Ji Fish Stove, which is the only remaining kind of traditional stove in the community and farmer mama will demo how to cook with the stove. There are different kinds of activities and experiences waiting for you to explore. At the end of your visit this morning, with a deeper understanding and appreciation of Penghu rural life. Then you’ll return to your transport and continue to the lunch restaurant which is located by the beautiful beach.
After lunch, proceed to Kueibi Mountain (Kueibishan), one of the eight most renowned views in Penghu, and wave-chasing in Kueibishan, it has become an important tourism resource in Penghu. The origin of the name Kueibishan: When looking at Beiliao coast from a distance, its mountain is shaped like a sea turtle bending over on the sea, therefore it was called "turtle wall mountain" (gueibishan), and later on renamed Kueibishan using its homonymic sound. During the low tide, a rare gravel beach trail will slowly reveal itself, led by the tour guide, you can walk to the island (Chiyu) a mile away. The change in tide and topographical change look just like the miracle of Moses, where he parted the Red Sea as narrated in the Bible which attracts a lot of tourists to visit this amazing site.
Please Note:
Accessibility and visibilty of the rare gravel beach trail at Kueibi is dependent on tidal conditions.
