Set off on a guided walking tour to discover the fascinating history and promising future of Nagato.
First stop on your Nagato exploration is Hagiyaki Kiln. With more than 300 years history, you will learn the process of how traditional Japanese pottery is made and have a chance to meet the local artist. Well known amongst tea enthusiasts, Hagiyaki Pottery is still the preferred pottery for traditional tea ceremonies around the world.
Next stop is the terrace of a local hotel along the river, where sandwiches and coffee will be served, and you can sit back and relax awhile surrounded by nature.
Take a short drive to the Nagato Yumoto Onsen town to explore. This Onsen, or hot spring, is the oldest in Yamaguchi Prefecture with over 600 years of history. The town had unfortunately fallen into disrepair until a group of residents set out to restore the tradition of the area and revitalize the town for the next generation. After years of hard work, transforming old homes into cafes, bars and shops, they were able to re-open in the spring of 2020. Enjoy a relaxing stroll along the Otozure River as your local guide will share the history of the town as well as the story behind the revitalization efforts.
With a camera filled with images highlighting the local charm, take a short drive back to the pier.
Please note:
In case of inclement weather, the refreshment stop will be moved inside the hotel. Participants must negotiate stairs and/or uneven surfaces and is therefore not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
