Al Zubarah Archaeological Site
"The walled coastal town of Al Zubarah in the Persian Gulf in the late 18th century and early 19th centuries, before it was destroyed in 1811 and abandoned in the early 1900s. A layer of sand blown from the desert has protected the remains of the site. Excavation has only taken place over a small part of the site, which offers an outstanding testimony to an urban trading and pearl-diving tradition."
Enjoy this spectacular tour through Qatar’s history and culture. Following the main highway northeast, stopping at Al Khor is a beautiful fishing village 15 miles north of Doha. Visit the fish market and dhow port. Al Khor was ruled by the Al Muhannadi tribe, consisting of seven Bedouin families, before Qatari independence in 1971, and the family is still influential here.Head to Al Thakhira, famous for its mangrove forests. The mangroves appear to be floating at high tide, but at low tide their root systems are sometimes visible.
The Al Zubarah town and fort awaits you an hour north of Doha. Enjoy a guided tour of this captivating site and discover the fascinating history of pearl diving in the region.
Lunch is served at a traditional Qatari majlis (house) next to Zubara Fort. Traditional Qatari food is served in an authentic Arabian atmosphere.
Please note:
Travel time from Al Zubarah Fort back to Doha is about 90 minutes and does not offer significant sightseeing opportunities -- this is a chance for you to simply relax and reflect on your day. Modest attire is required; shoulders and knees must be covered. Parts of the ride will be bumpy -- pregnant women and guests with back or neck conditions should take this into consideration. This excursion covers long distances by coach. A two-minute walk is required to reach Zubarah Fort and a 15-minute walk to reach the Al Zubarah excavation site. Wear comfortable walking shoes. A road construction project is underway between the port and the city of Doha; expect delays. Tour does not operate on Fridays or Saturdays
