Venture into Litchfield National Park to see the awe-inspiring termite mounds -- natural insect-architecture marvels synonymous with the Northern Territory landscape. Discover refreshing waterfalls cascading through lush greenery for a day of natural wonders and captivating scenery.
Travel by air-conditioned motorcoach with a two-hour panoramic drive south from Darwin past abandoned World War II airstrips and through the town of Batchelor. Entering Litchfield National Park, you'll drive another hour, ascending the rocky Tabletop Range, where dry woodlands and forests dominate the huge sandstone plateau. This fascinating, uniquely beautiful area was originally the home of the Aboriginal Wagait people.
You’re headed to the famous termite mounds. One of Litchfield's most fascinating sights, this collection of hundreds of termite mounds occupies a wide swathe of otherwise empty ground. Some stand more than six feet tall, creating the appearance of a rather poorly maintained cemetery. Each mound is like an enormous compass, with its thin edge pointing north-south and its broad back facing east-west, minimizing its exposure to the sun. This ingenious design keeps the mounds cool for the termites inside.
Head to the Litchfield Café (or similar) for a well-deserved lunch.
Then, an afternoon drive brings you to Wangi Falls. The falls flow into a large waterhole surrounded by lush monsoonal rainforest -- another of Litchfield National Park's most popular attractions.
