Travel to Assos, founded from 1000-900 BC by Aeolian colonists from Lesbos. Aristotle lived here and opened his Academy, and St Paul also visited the city. Today, Assos is an Aegean-coast seaside retreat amid ancient ruins.
It is possible to see much of the surrounding area from the ancient Temple of Athena, built atop a trachyte crag. On a clear day you will see nearby Lesbos to the south, Pergamum in the southeast, and Mount Ida of Phrygia in the east.
Many of the old buildings of Assos are in ruins today, but Behramkale (the city's modern name) is still active. It still serves as a port, and the temple ruins remain.
Down the steep seaward side of the hill at the water's edge is the hamlet of Liman, with old stone houses now serving as inns and restaurants. Explore here and enjoy a taste of local wine and a cheese platter to complete your experience.
Please note: Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Tour requires walking approximately one mile. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and steps. A small vehicle may be used for the transfer between Behramkale and Port Liman.
