Charming Kristiansand is the fifth-largest city in Norway, but it is small enough to be enjoyed on a leisurely and informative walk with your local guide. The history of Kristiansand spans more than 370 years, and you'll see areas that embody this long history, from the stunning Kilden Performing Arts Centre, which opened in 2012, to the Old Town's timber buildings and houses dating back to the 1700s. Although many of the houses are painted white, this area's history is rather colorful.
As you walk, your guide will point out the fortress built in the 1670s and the Gothic-style cathedral from the late 1880s. Stop at the fish market and the marketplace next to the cathedral, packed with flowers and fresh farm produce during summertime.
Your walk continues to the Kunstsilo Museum, where you will find that the history of Kristiansand comes to life before your very eyes, particularly in the Olaf Isaachsen painting depicting the devastating city fire of 1892. Pause to browse in the museum's gift shop before returning, on foot, to the ship.
Please note: Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Participants must be in good physical condition. Tour requires approximately 1½ miles of walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, and a few steps.
