Transfer by speedboat across the Strait of Magellan to Isla Magdalena and Isla Marta. Together these islands make up the Los Pinguinos Natural Monument, which protects more than 120,000 penguins and a small colony of sea lions. Both islands form an interesting ecosystem, making a visit a must-do.
Marta Island is home to more than 1,000 sea lions, along with cormorants, skuas, the Austral seagull, the Antarctic pigeon and sea elephants. In order to protect the wildlife, your visit to Marta Island is a circumnavigation only, making it possible to admire and photograph both the colony and the diversity of marine birds that live here.
However, on Magdalena Island, it is possible to disembark for about an hour, to actually walk through and to interact with the Magellan penguin colony. More than 150,000 of these adorable birds live here.
Please note:
The boat transfer is quick and the boat's windows are small and tend to fog over; plan to take photos (if any) from the small back deck rather than from inside the boat. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Tour operates rain or shine, but may be cancelled by the operator in the event of extremely bad weather or unsuitable conditions. The circumnavigation of Marta Island is dependent upon weather and sea conditions. Rough seas can be experienced on the navigation to Magdalena Island; guests prone to sea sickness should prepare accordingly. Seasonal migration can affect tour operation in March and April.
