Join an Alaska Native guide to experience the dynamic history of this island community through the eyes of its First Nation people — the Tlingit.
Journey from past to present as an invited guest, crossing the wooden bridge over tidal waters onto Chief Shakes Island. As you explore the island, you'll learn about Chief Shakes' House and tribal history, and view replica totem poles.
Reboard your shuttle and head to the Wrangell Museum. Here, the island's history blossoms as you walk chronologically among artifacts and images depicting Tlingit life, Russian settlement, the British trading post era, the gold rush frenzy, and the rugged logging legacy of this community.
Pass through the historical streets of downtown Wrangell en route to Petroglyph Beach — a beach studded with the highest concentration of ancient petroglyph carvings in Southeast Alaska. Your guide will reveal the original stones, unravel the mysteries of the site, and assist you in creating a souvenir rubbing from your choice of replica.
Please note: Tour requires walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, rocks, sand and driftwood; however, participants can opt to remain at the observation platform. Wear comfortable walking shoes. All sites visited are ADA-compliant; however, mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation.
