Before or after the regular bear season, you'll visit Anan Creek to get acquainted with the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska.
Travel through the wilderness in protected waters on a beautiful 35-mile jet boat ride. Keep an eye out for wildlife and marine mammals from the boat's comfortable, heated cabin. Your destination is a rich nature experience and exploration at the renowned Anan Wildlife Observation area.
Arriving at Anan Creek, disembark the boat near the lagoon, where early summer brings one of Alaska's most prolific pink salmon runs.
Walk about 45 minutes along a very scenic hiking trail with a naturalist/guide and Alaska Native cultural interpreter to learn more about this special rainforest ecosystem, pristine shoreline, and the waterfalls around you. Your guide is a Wrangell resident with extensive wilderness experience and historical knowledge. A local Native cultural host will describe the fascinating history of the Alaska Native people and the way they fished the bountiful mid-summer fish runs at this historical fish camp.
A snack and beverage are served when you're back on the boat after your hike.
Please note: Participants must be in good physical condition with no balance concerns. Terrain includes approximately 25 steps total throughout the trail (most are located at the trailhead), an improved trail with gravel, and a few bridges over the waterways. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. The boat and trail are not wheelchair accessible. Total walking distance is one mile. Conditions change with the weather, and the trail can be slippery. Wear sturdy, non-skid, water-resistant walking shoes. There is no dock at the trailhead — participants must climb out of the boat onto a rocky shoreline. At low tide, the rocks are slippery. Wear sturdy, non-skid, water-resistant walking shoes. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Tour operates only before or after the regular bear season. Wildlife sightings are a possibility but are not guaranteed. Minimum age is 6 years.
