Join the Expedition team for a spectacular Zodiac outing designed to unravel remote Umivik Bay and its incredible geology. If we cruise near the face of the glacier, you'll receive a cold welcome from daring icebergs that have parted ways with the glacier to venture on their own into beautiful, if forbidding, Ammassalik Fjord.
Semi-circular Umivik Bay is a bite out of the King Frederick VI Coast of Greenland, just north of the Denmark Strait. Unlike the sheer cliffs and rugged terrain presented by much of the coastline, the shoreline that skirts the inside of the bay is smooth, and the massive Greenland Ice Sheet, via a series of undulating slopes, bows down to kiss the sea. This welcoming profile persuaded Fridtjof Nansen to set out from here on his successful 1888 walk across Greenland.
Please note: Included Expeditions cannot be booked in advance. The ship's Expedition team will communicate finalized content and departure information. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Life jackets are provided and must be worn. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
