Travel to Fukui to visit Eiheiji Temple. This temple of eternal peace is the foremost for the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism. It is situated in the tree-clad mountains. Founded in 1244, Eiheiji is the perfect environment for trainee monks. More than 70 large and small structures remain here, including seven main buildings dating back approximately 680 years.
Follow a monk or a priest on a guided tour arranged exclusively for Seabourn guests. Visit the various halls and participate in a Zen meditation — a memorable experience.
After lunch, served locally, you will visit the Tojinbo Cliffs. Part of Echizen Kaga Coastline Quasi-National Park, Tojinbo is a fifty-foot-tall cliff of unusually shaped pentagonal and hexagonal rock columns. Created by a volcanic eruption 130 million years ago and further shaped by wave erosion, these extend for about two-thirds of a mile and are one of only three such rock formations in the world. See if you can spot Lion Rock, Candle Rock and other shapeshifters.
Please note: You must remove your shoes at Eiheiji Temple. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and more than 300 steps with no elevator available. You will sit on the floor (required) for the Zen meditation. Suitable only for physically fit guests. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Photographing the monks at Eiheiji temple is not allowed. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring local currency, as most vendors do not accept US dollars or credit cards. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
