This whirlwind tour of Matsuyama traverses the city and takes in many of its highlights, with visits to its most engaging sites.
A panoramic drive takes you to Dogo Onsen — the oldest and most famous hot spring baths in the country. With a history stretching back more than 1,000 years, Dogo Onsen has a long history of welcoming members of Japan's Imperial Family. View the baths and the lovely bathhouse.
Back on the coach, you'll head to Ishite-ji Temple. Tour part of the sprawling Buddhist compound that sits on the 1,100-year-old Shikoku Pilgrimage Route, and the temple itself.
Arriving by cable car, you'll visit Matsuyama Castle, occupying prime strategic real estate atop 433-foot Mt Katsuyama. This 17th-century castle was once the seat of power for the Matsudaira Clan, who ruled this area during the Edo period. Enclosed by four gates and stone walls, the castle donjon is an Important Cultural Property. Inside, view displays of swords, armor, and other items that belonged to the Matsudaira family. The cable car ride up and down offers scenivviews of the city and the Seto Inland Sea (Weather permitting).
Please note: You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, flagstones, inclines, gravel, grass, and hundreds of steep steps up and down. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Expect a delay to board the cable car. You will not bath at the Dogo Onsen. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. Tour sequence may vary. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
