A tender ride followed by a van transfer brings you to Lee Bay — the official entrance to Rakiura National Park. From the trailhead, the symbolic Chain Link sculpture marks the connection between Stewart Island (Rakiura) and the South Island.
The 2½-mile walk to Maori Beach follows a gently undulating, well-maintained gravel track through native bush and along the rugged coastline. The track offers sweeping views across Foveaux Strait and passes through peaceful forest corridors alive with birdsong. Native bird species such as kaka, tui, korimako (bellbird), and inquisitive weka are commonly seen here.
There is also potential to spot New Zealand sea lions along the shoreline. A wooden bridge spanning Little River enhances the scenic beauty of the route.
Maori Beach is a remote and tranquil destination. Between 1913 and 1935, it was home to a small settlement that included a sawmill, a school, and several workers' cottages. Although much of the area has been reclaimed by regenerating forest, remnants of this history remain — most notably the rusting boiler and steam engine used in the mill's operation.
Return to Lee Bay along the same track with a van transfer from Lee Bay back to the pier.
Please note:
Tour requires strenuous walking for 4 – 4½ hours — a total of almost six miles. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, grass, and many steep steps. Bring bottled water. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Bring a backpack to stow any layers you shed. Wear sturdy non-skid walking/hiking shoes. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
