Go beyond the ordinary with a tour of Tasmania’s rugged landscapes and dramatic coastal scenery.
Travel over the forested Tasman Peninsula to Eaglehawk Neck – a narrow isthmus that separates the peninsula from the rest of Tasmania. Stop here for a short walk to view the Tessellated Pavement, the Officers' Quarters and the Dog Line, where savage dogs once guarded the isthmus to prevent convicts escaping from Port Arthur.
Next, visit some of the more unusual features of the peninsula. The Devil's Kitchen and the Tasman Arch (you will visit one or the other) are both natural rock formations that are located high above the ocean on top of rugged cliffs. These geological features are nature's marvels, where softer layers of rock have been eroded by the waves, leaving the stronger top layers to withstand the forces of nature.
At the blow hole, a weak spot in the rock has eroded to the very top layer. When the waves build up pressure they spray the water through the hole – similar to a whale's spout – only stronger.
Your final stop is at Pirates Bay Lookout. Take in some spectacular views of the stunning coastline with its beautiful beaches of white sands, blue water and rugged rocky cliffs.
Please note:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring a hat and wear sunscreen. The Port Arthur Historic Site can be enjoyed after the morning tour or before the afternoon tour. Approximately a 5-10 minute walk from the tender arrival point to the coach departure point, the walk way is over uneven ground and includes a slight incline to reach the Visitor Centre.
