A tour of the Basque country is the perfect way to make your visit to France exciting and unforgettable. This is a captivating journey through charming towns and villages, rolling hills, and verdant valleys.
It’s a short drive to picturesque Saint Jean de Luz -- formerly a pirate port where Basque privateers operating under the authority of the French king were the scourge of English merchant ships.
Your second destination is the Basque village of Aïnhoa. This village was almost totally destroyed by the Spaniards in 1629. The houses you see today are relatively new -- built in the 17th and 18th centuries. Check out the main street with its houses built in Labourd style. Their construction dates and owners’ names are engraved on the lintels.
Fifteen minutes away is the village of Sare, surrounded by superb Basque farmhouses. In the shadow of Rhune Mountain, this area lay at the heart of some serious medieval smuggling action. At a restored Basque-style house in Sare, enjoy a tasting of some delicious local specialties -- cheese and Basque cake served with cider.
Please note: Uneven ground in both Saint Jean de Luz and Aïnhoa. You will encounter some cobblestone streets. There are steps at Basque House.
