Perched at 2,300 feet above sea level, Montserrat is home to one of the greatest Benedictine monastic complexes of the Middle Ages. You will have approximately 90 minutes to explore this amazing area, including the Montserrat Basilica. A superb example of Romanic, Gothic and Renaissance architecture, the basilica is decorated with statues of Christ and the Twelve Apostles. Its interior is renowned for its gilded wooden sculpture of Catalonia's patron saint, La Moreneta, also known as the Black Madonna. Pay homage to the silver altar dedicated to the Virgin.
Then, stroll in the plaza, browsing in the many shops before lunch at a local restaurant.
Drive through the lush Catalonian countryside, rich with vineyards and olive, almond and hazelnut orchards, to Sant Sadurni d'Anoia. This is the nexus of Catalonia's wine industry, and you'll visit a Modernist-style winery here. Codorníu Cellar has a family history of winemaking dating back to the 16th century. It is the oldest family business in Spain and one of the oldest in the world. Visit the largest underground cellar in Europe, traveling in a small wheeled train. Enjoy a tasting of two types of Codorniu cava (sparkling wine).
Return to Tarragona at the end of an exhilarating day.
Please note: The order of the tour may vary. Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts are not allowed. Tour timing may preclude viewing the Black Madonna if the lines are extremely long. The Black Madonna can be unpredictably closed for viewing due to religious events. The route to Montserrat is winding. Guests prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication. Tour sequence may vary. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces and steps. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Dress in layers. Wear comfortable walking shoes. You are welcome to bring any tour-related alcohol purchases (beer, wine, spirits) back to the ship with you to enjoy on board; there is no corkage fee.
