Set out on a memorable foraging adventure on Heimaey, a gem of Iceland’s Westman Islands. With your guide, explore striking lava landscapes while hearing stories of past eruptions and discovering edible plants and seaweeds along the way.
Heimaey is rooted in Icelandic fishing heritage, with abundant waters supporting a lively fleet and shorelines where wild herbs and seaweeds thrive in unique micro-seasons.
From dramatic volcanic terrain and a sheltered harbor to soaring cliffs and unspoiled beaches, the island offers a stunning setting. Wildlife is plentiful, and the welcoming fishing community adds authentic charm.
Your experience begins at the scenic harbor, where you’ll meet the team from NÆS Restaurant. From there, walk toward the volcanic area reshaped by an eruption just over 50 years ago, hearing stories of island life and history along the way.
You’ll cross the lava fields of Eldfell (Fire Mountain), which erupted in the early hours of January 23, 1973, transforming the island overnight. Thanks to swift action, nearly all 5,000 residents were safely evacuated.
Afterward, enjoy a delightful lunch at NÆS (pronounced “nice”), featuring a six-course menu of seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Created by renowned chef and cookbook author Gísli Matt, the experience also includes cocktails made with foraged island ingredients.
At NÆS, Iceland’s natural bounty is celebrated with creativity and care, blending traditional techniques like grilling, fermenting, foraging, and preserving with a modern touch.
Please note: This tour is conducted on foot. Guests should be able to keep pace with the group. Terrain includes uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, grass, and steps. Not recommended for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.
